When people think about foster care, the image that often comes to mind is of young children. But the truth is, many of the children waiting for homes are teenagers—and they deserve the same love, stability and support as any other child.
Teens in foster care are at a critical stage in life. They’re navigating big emotions, planning for the future, and trying to figure out where they belong. Unfortunately, many of them have experienced instability and loss, which can make this stage even more challenging. What they need most isn’t complicated—but it is deeply meaningful.
1. Connection & Stability
Every teen needs a safe place to land—a home where they can exhale and feel accepted for who they are. Stability provides the foundation for trust. It says, You matter enough for someone to show up and stay.
For many teens in foster care, relationships have been disrupted. They need consistency, routines and someone who truly cares. That doesn’t mean perfection—it means being present and dependable.
2. Someone Who Believes in Them
Teen years are full of self-discovery, but they can also come with self-doubt. Teens in foster care often carry the weight of past experiences that can make them question their worth. What they need is someone who sees their potential and reminds them that their dreams are possible.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to believe in them—and let them know you do. That belief can change everything.
3. A Voice & a Choice
One of the most empowering things you can offer a teen is the opportunity to have a say in their life. Many decisions have been made for them, not with them. Foster parents who listen, respect their opinions, and include them in decision-making can help restore a sense of control and dignity.
Something as simple as letting them choose dinner one night, or having a voice in school activities, can send a powerful message: Your voice matters.
4. Preparation for the Future
Adulthood is around the corner, and teens in foster care need more than love—they need life skills. Things like budgeting, cooking, applying for jobs, or even navigating college applications can feel overwhelming without guidance. A foster parent can help by teaching, encouraging, and celebrating small wins along the way. Our TLSS Program also helps teens transitioning into adulthood with these important life skills.
These moments—practicing how to cook a meal, learning to change a tire, creating a résumé—are opportunities to build confidence and independence.
Every teen deserves more than just a place to stay. They deserve love, support, and someone in their corner. Could that someone be you?
