Growing Skills, Growing Confidence: TLSS Monthly Trainings

Updated: Oct 7

At Bringing Families Together, we believe that preparing youth for independence means more than just providing housing—it’s about equipping them with the practical skills, confidence and support systems they need to thrive. That’s why our TLSS (Transitional Living Scattered Site) program holds monthly trainings designed to teach, encourage, and empower our youth in real and meaningful ways.

Led by our dedicated TLSS Coordinator, Angel Crawford, and supported by our TLSS Specialist Kyle Dunn, these sessions blend practical lessons with life-long skills—and always a touch of fun. From managing finances to practicing social etiquette, every training is another step toward independence and self-confidence.

Here’s a look at the summer trainings our TLSS youth took part in:

🌟 June: Building Portfolios for the Future

Youth created personalized portfolios filled with important personal documents and resources. Together, they identified three trusted adults in their lives who could serve as continued support. Angel guided them through setting up (or strengthening) bank accounts, building monthly budgets with real lease and utility costs, and learning the importance of saving. Each youth also received a portable file holder to keep their documents safe and organized—a simple tool that supports big steps toward independence.

🌟 July: BBQ, Connection, and Overcoming Struggles

At July’s training, the group gathered for a summer BBQ. While enjoying a meal together, youth shared personal challenges they’ve faced. Each wrote their reflections into their portfolio and brainstormed three strategies to overcome those struggles.

The activity wasn’t just about identifying barriers—it was about building problem-solving skills and knowing they have support from Angel, Kyle and the BFT team to help them along the way.

Nothing brings people together like good food, and the BBQ served as the perfect backdrop for honest conversations and growth.

🌟 August: Learning Etiquette and Healthy Choices

This month, youth learned what it means to show up confidently in public spaces. Dressed appropriately, with hygiene and grooming in mind, they practiced ordering meals within a budget, learning about taxes, and tipping properly.

Angel also introduced them to making healthier food choices by considering calories and nutrition. What could have felt like a simple dinner out turned into a powerful lesson in etiquette, budgeting, and self-care—all while sparking lively conversation and lots of laughter.

Our youth had a great time practicing etiquette skills—laughing, learning and encouraging one another every step of the way, as you can see in the photos.

These trainings may look different each month, but the heart of them is always the same: helping our youth build the skills, resilience, and confidence they’ll carry into adulthood.

💜 We’re grateful for Angel’s leadership and our TLSS team’s creativity in making these trainings both meaningful and memorable. Stay tuned as we continue to share highlights from future TLSS monthly trainings!
